I was just wondering if anybody knows how thick an average layer of wax is? Maybe 1/1000 of an inch?

Nowhere near that. The entire thickness of paint on your car, including primer, color, and clear, is only about .005". The clear is about .002" of that...so the wax is nowhere near half.
