Reformulated #20?

I recently got a sample of #20 thanks to Mike Phillips, and this morning, I got to try it on a 2001 Blue RAV4.



The reason I got the sample was that I had complained that #20 was thin and smelled terrible.



Right off the bat, when I opened this bottle, I knew I wasn`t in Kansas anymore. The consistency was very much like a liquid wax. Poured like #26. As a matter of fact, it smelled a lot like #26. Yummy. Colour is white.



The RAV4 was washed, lightly clayed, and then gone over with DACP and a Meguiar`s yellow pad. The reason for the DACP was water marks, and also dealer installed rotary marks courtesy of the dealer detailer (car was bought used).



I applied using a Meguiar`s foam applicator. Verdict? I don`t like foam applicators. I found that it was a bit grabby, causing me to use too much product. From now on, I will go back to my terry applicators. The #20 applied nice and smooth (except for the problem with the applicator). I noticed that the cleaning ability of the #20 is weaker than the older bottle that I had (maybe that`s why it smells better - less cleaners).



Waited for about 30 minutes while I did things like clean the windows, treat the tires, etc. Removed with an MF. Easy to remove where it was applied thin. Painful in the areas where I had let dry on think, but still nothing like removing SG. Just like letting wax dry too long. Hardened and stubborn, but buffed out with effort.



Overall impression: I think this newer #20 would layer better. The shine was very good (but then the car was in like new condition, except for the swirls). Easy to use if applied thinly, and smells great. Downside? I noticed lots of bugs were attracted to it, just like they are to #26. As a matter of fact, I accidently smeared a couple when buffing off.



Conclusion: Nice easy one step.:up However, durability remains to be seen. Will know in a month or two, as this owner never washes his car, and would jump at the chance for me to wash it. I`ll report back then.

Thanks for the info.



Try using Viking`s knobbed applicator. I use one to apply various sealants and it works better than plain foam or terry.

I did notice the odor as changed, different petro in it, more refined my guess.



Should be interesting to try. Application seems same for most sealants, thin! Wondering if letting it setup too long makes it that more difficult to remove.



I`m going to test it on the company car (98 Ford Escort wagon-white) which is in need of some serious DACP!



Hopefully the newer product didn`t smear like the old stuff. The long term should be interesting to see.

Thanks for the review. I`ve only used the watery, stinky variety, so it is refreshing to hear it is improved. The only bottles that I have that are at least partially full are Gold Class, S100, and Zymol Cleaner Wax - none of which are known for their overall durability. #20 just might be my choice for a winter wax...or maybe MPPP...or #20...hmm

Yup, they went to a nonaromatic naptha and a "light distillate" (CAS # 64742-14-9). Those two items make up as much as 40% of #20`s ingredients.

Hmmm, I`m almost out of Final Polish. I may have to get some #20 before I order more FP.



Concerning foam vs terry cloth applicators, my experience is the reverse of yours. Terry cloth absorbs more of the product and has been more wasterful, IMO.

It might just me my inexperience with foam apps. Or maybe it`s just the Meguiar`s apps. I find that as I am spreading the sealant, the "face" of that apps drags and catches on the paint, while the "back" (the part I am holding onto) slides away from the back.



You`re right though, that the terry apps waste a bit more product. But I find that I can smear it around quite a bit more to get the product more evenly distributed. :nixweiss

Seems like a lot of solvent to me, plus there`s some other solvents that Bret didn`t list...and, according to the most recent MSDS, #20 can contain up to 12% abrasives.

If it does have that much abrasive, it must be pretty fine, as I could not remove even a minor dried bug splat with it, and had to use DACP to remove it.

That`s **extremely** surprising to me - with the high solvent ratio and the kaolin (clay), it should have decent cleaning capabilities... Very interesting. Although, bug guts are pretty stubborn - I`ve had some survive SMR, etc., so it may not be that surprising on second thought.

Hmm...I guess I`ll have to try it on some car that has some oxidation on it to see how well it really cleans.

good one steper imo. This is probably a better product for ppl cars in the winter if they want to get a polymer product locally instead of having to buy zaino or klasse.
