    Defelsko paint thickness gauges

I am looking at getting a paint thickness gauge.

Are Defelsko`s really worth the money?

I want to get the best gauge on the market.

If, so what make or model should I consider?

    Thanks,

    M.

I find those statements to be at odds with each other. The best gauge on the market might not be worth the money. I would say the Defelsko may be the best gauge on the market, it`s not a knockoff like a Highline. I can tell you I tried a Highline for another purpose and it simply didn`t have the resolution required. That being said it may be fine for polishing paint.

If you want a really good instrument (which is your stated intent), then you need a Defelsko or an Elcometer (and there may be others).

(If I`m not mistaken Elcometer makes the Highline, but they distance themselves from the brand for obvious reasons)

I have heard from a few high end Detailers that this DeFelsko is the best for their needs -- https://www.autopia-carcare.com/defe...l#.X0WohNypH3g
It is also $2,700.00, so it would be nice to be able to make enough money to pay for it, so you can then get closer to start making a profit, if you are just starting out..

I have never felt I needed that one, because I already have a lot of automotive painting background, so a while ago, I purchased the Highline total thickness meter, and it has been fine for getting a ball park for what the - Total Thickness - primer, color coat, clear - is under that spot Im about to paint correct..

The best thing even this fairly inexpensive Total Thickness Meter does for me is first - sets the baseline - how many microns of Total Thickness is under there, and then after I use my Rotary on that spot, how many microns of Total Thickness is there now??

Just know that there is probably nothing in this craft that can ever substitute for knowing exactly how much material was -Applied- to the vehicle`s panels, unless you did it yourself or had the numbers in microns that were applied to each layer, like from the Factory, which of course, will never happen..

I know of no one that has ever gone to that detail in my life... Every time I painted a vehicle, I always applied extra coats of everything and especially the clear coats, and the blending, so that there was -room- to block color sand, and compound, and still have enough material on the surfaces to hopefully last a long time..

If you decide to get a meter someday, you will see that any vehicle that is a known repaint, or has repainted panels, the total thickness reading/s will be a lot higher in those places.. The forever dilemma will be how much of that- total thickness- number in microns, is just the clear coat???

    Good luck with this !
