Hey I`m doing this from my phone so if this ain`t right spot then please move. Has anyone used any matte coating that worked well and how does it work on shiny paint if it gets on it?

IMO the matte castings are more about marketing and a way to get you to buy another product. I`ve used several different paint coatings now on matte paints and none of them add gloss, but will darken the paint slightly, some more than others. Matte paint is still clear coat, it just has flattening agents added to it.

If coatings need to be abraded prior to redo, how is that done on a matte finish?
It`s not. I had this discussion with another detailer a while back too. Coating matte paints has it`s risks with potential high spots and appears to be a one shot deal at this time. But, IMO a coated matte paint will be better protected then a non-coated finish and look better in the long run. Regardless of whether it`s coated or not you can`t do any paint correction and having it coated will be better protected against staining, etching, and also be resistant to chemical cleaners like Tarminator and IronX type products.
Just my $.02

We need a thread on taking care of matte finishes. It`s kind of like Alcantara fabric. Just not enough knowledge in one spot. You don`t need it until you really need it. Lol

I asked about the same over here: New to me surface: Coating? Do nothing?
Nobody replied. I guess I share the concerns that Chad notes...you may not be able to un-do it if you want to without completely altering the appearance.
I bought a small test sample of black vinyl wrap and applied it to the area of concern.

RaskyR1- Yeah, the whole "how to maintain long-term?" thing really has me scratching my head...I`d kinda lean towards thinking it`s simply gonna get marred up to some extent no matter what. I mean, I can go quite a few years without any significant marring, but sooner or later something always happens and I`d sure hate for it to be forever.
Too bad as I`ve *always* liked the idea ever since reading about the "battleship (flat) gray" of James Bond`s Bentley (in the original novels). A pal of mine did his Nova in a flattened *silver* (LSPed with TR3) and it was just sooooo cool IMO.

I asked Brandt for his thoughts on this due to his Mopar posse. He said it was OK to post his comments:

In my situation, I`m specifically looking for something that will provide some resistance to abrasion, even if it`s minimal. That`s the reason I keep coming back to thought of using a coating on that surface on the motorcycle.
tom p.- I`d lean towards a PPF made for such finishes. Otherwise I myself would just let [Real Life] take its toll and consider it Patina.
Accumulator, thanks. I think that`s the correct solution for my application...
Tom P.- Now to find somebody to do the PPF to your standards Or you gonna try DIYing it?
No, it`s a really odd shape. I think I`d go thru a lot of material "practicing"...
