Beginner Coating

I am interested in trying a coating but don`t know where to start. I am looking for something probably in the 30 dollar range. Any ideas?

If you want a coating to apply while the car is still wet, I recommend McKees Hydro Blue

IMO a coating should last longer than 4 months that McKees claims on the AG page. This seems much more like a sealant. Just FYI for the beginner Coatings usually last around 2 years and dont get sprayed on while the car is still wet. The wording on a lot of products is sometimes tricky so be careful. That being said I LOVE THE MCKEES PRODUCTS IN GENERAL AND DONT THINK THEY ARE OUT TO HARM OR MISLEAD ANYONE. I personally do not have any experience with the McKees Hydro Blue so take that into consideration too.

Its a little more but I think your best bet is Optimum Gloss Coat. Super easy to use. Looks great, is very durable and is extremely reliable and spoken very highly of.

In the $30 range McKees Paint Coating would fill the bill and get you into "true" coatings. You will get 12-18 months of durability. Remember your results will be determined by how much work you put into the paint correction portion of the detail. The car needs to be as perfect as you can get it before applying the coating. A coating will magnify swirls and scratches.

The only coating I`ve used is Optimums Gloss Coat (v1.0 and the current one), and I`ve only used them on wheels (for various reasons). In my obviously limited experience, the OGC is Accumulator-proof and does seem to last longer (at least on wheels) than any conventional LSP I`ve tried. It wasn`t all *that* hard to avoid the "high spots"/etc. issues, but I`m still only gonna use it on wheels (a less critical application than, say...the hood) though I might try it on some aluminum/etc. trim some time.

Infinite force field works well. It`s not ceramic it`s acrylic based however. The term coating is used everywhere it seems these days, I hate marketing teams

To the op McKee`s seems like something to try and fits what you are looking for.

Starting to have my doubts about it being that durable after seeing it fail rather early on my uncles car. Hopefully it is just a fluke and gloss coat on my dad`s car proves otherwise.

User experiences with all this stuff varies heavily. Pinnacle Black Label v2 failed in under 9months on my mom`s car but others have had great experiences with it. You`re the only one I`ve seen not have stellar results with gloss coat. No product is always perfect but Gloss Coat has a sterling track record from what I`ve seen.

Totally agree with you. For instance PBL V2 is going strong at 17-18 months on my mom`s car. I`m starting to see quite a few posts on Autogeek of other gloss coat users having issues recently.

McKee`s is another one that folks seem hit or miss on. But at $35 it`s pretty darn hard to beat.

Thanks for all the input. Those of you referencing Mckee`s, do you mean Mckee`s 37 paint coating or Mckee`s 37 Hydro blue Sio2 coating. As someone already said, the latter seems more like a sealant, lasting only 3 months or so.
