looks like a solid product, now the question is - do I need the pen light too? doesn`t really seem like it from those pics Merlin posted....gotta see if there are any hot deals out there..dang I knew I`d regret not picking up the pen and handheld on the initial sale on DI

have you been able to compare the scangrip to this one? I`ve been wanting this one. I believe last person I asked stated that the scangrip IS better, didn`t elaborate much on why/how .

Get the handheld for sure. It is worth it. The pen light is nice but in my opinion it is more optional. Cool to have though. The headlamp is impressive as well. All of them have the right color to see defects.

DI has the handheld for $119.99. You can price match it.

Could look into getting a Fenix or Nitecore penlight, probably cheaper than the scangrip version. I know the Scangrip has a "warm" color tone, but you could do some research on Candlepower forums and see what brands are available with similar specs. Save some money and get something very comparable.

Re: Calling all members who recently bought scangrip lights...

not a scangrip but i purchased this one.

i love it. battery powered, shows defects well, and good mobility on the dolly.

only con i can think of is the way the lamp attaches to the tripod, it uses a wing screw to do so.... im sure i can figure out a way to make it faster/easier, just haven`t bothered me enough

wish i had a scangrip to compare.

I have the Astro handheld and is cash money. For a third of the price of the scangrip. Somebody please enlighten me to spend $150 on an identical light.

I like mine. I`m not sure how it compares to other lights of this type. It`s kinda like you really only need one. I don`t know if it is waaaay better than a penlight. I does the job as intended.

    can i get a donut?

here`s MY experience with one of the Scangrip Sunmatch (handheld): The year was 2017, it was a dark and stormy night. Oops. wrong story.

At the recent Competition Ready filming, I noticed Mr. Mike Phillips holding one. I asked if I could hold it, as I wanted to get a feel for it. He told me to go use it on the car. As soon as i grabbed hold of the handheld, I wanted one. It`s a good size for my hand. the rubbery case felt solid. The overall construction was robust. Held it in one hand, then in both. I stared. I inspected for flaws or bad design ideas (as if). After about 25 minutes of looking it over (yes, I`m stretching the time out), I walked over to a black 1929 Bentley to use it. The car looked good where it stood. I clicked the light on and aimed it at the black paint. Whoa. Yes, i could see the swirls now.

I liked the light. So much so, I thought about ordering one as soon as I got home. And I already have a Flex light, a few other random flashlights, and even a DIY Sungun. But I liked this one more than the others. And I`m cheap, so that made the decision to buy/ not buy even harder. I also looked around for the best price online. On the internet I found the Astro version, at a significant savings. I then thought about that one. Looks similar. Great savings. I`m cheap, so they say. I also remembered having some not-so-pleasant experiences buying the cheaper versions of things, so this was a tough decision for me.

In the end, AG had a sale, and I took advantage of said sale and bought me something else entirely. So there went my light money!

Re: Calling all members who recently bought scangrip lights...

Another vote for the handheld Astra Light. It`s great. Battery lasts a good long time, the light is perfect for seeing defects, and it is magnetic. I pretty much stopped using all my other flashlights and I have tried quite a few. My favorite part about it is that what you see is what you get and you never have anything you missed show up in the sun after using it.

I have the Scangrip headlamp and it makes interiors much easier, plus it`s good for if I`m laying down or doing a weird panel where I keep getting in the way of the light. Very comfortable and you can operate it hands free if you need to by waving your hand to activate it(or just nodding towards your shoulder like I do). I got that on a double dip sale back when we had Connect(RIP) so that makes it easier to stomach, IMO

Here are a few pics of the astra in action and on different paint colors:

I got the ScanGrip Kit and really like having a case to keep them in when traveling to a job. If you can afford these you will not regret your purchase.SCANGRIP Colourmatch Kit

Absolute the best hand held light on the market. As close to perfect sun as possible!
