    Should I Essence before PBL?

Edit: anyone have any longevity reports of essence then PBL?

Re: Should I Essence before PBL?

I`ve tried it. Despite proper application, the PBL seemed to put a "grainy" texture on top of my silver. I`m not sure now whether I`m going to do the whole van.
On a side note, I applied Ultima upp and was surprised how much gloss it added.

Re: Should I Essence before PBL?

Im only gonna do essence then pbl on the trunk lid. Hopefully i can check up on it once a month or so at a meet. I don`t want to risk any issues, not that I am expecting any...just want to go with what I have used before in this case here.

Keep us updated. How will you know that PBL failed if Essence claims to offer a year of protection?

I have pondered that as well.

I need to do this on my truck instead, perhaps the tailgate.

I give up on the idea for this vehicle but still interested if anyone has any feedback on this topic of course.

    Should I Essence before PBL?

I recall a test somebody posted on topping Essense with several coatings. I didn`t get it then and I don`t get it now. Such a test shouldn`t be posted until after a year minimum. These monthly updates don`t mean anything because essence is good for a year by itself so what`s the point of monthly updates up to 12 months? The whole layering topic is kinda nuts in terms of longevity and it`s even crazier when layering different LSPs of every possible combination. Imo my best results come from doing the best pre LSP possible and applying ONE product whether it`s wax, sealant, or coating. Boosters are ok every month or so.

Re: Should I Essence before PBL?

I`m not sure I would want to use Essence prior to any coating.

I`m guessing your going to drag out the polisher to use Essence. Why would you want to use something that can fill defects rather than just fix them???

If you use Essence, how will you know if you are actually correcting the paint or just filling the defects? Or is the purpose your not supposed to care?

If you use Essence, how will you know if your pad/machine/technique is leaving micro-marring? Or, is the purpose you are not supposed to care?

They *claim* the glaze/filling lasts a year. But, we all know most manufacturers claims are inflated.

So, say you are applying a 2 year coating and the "filling" of Essence lasts 9 mos...then are you left with a coated car with defects?

Seems like it would be a better product to use with an LSP with like a 6 month life. That way, at least the filling would last the lifespan of the LSP...

    Dunno.

Essence`s beading looks like large irregular shaped blobs.

Re: Should I Essence before PBL?

I didn`t do it at all
i agree, even if it lasts 1 year i expect pbl v2 to last at least 2...not a good idea in the end IMO

This looks good enough to me

Re: Should I Essence before PBL?

The gloss from essence is higher then any other product on the market imo.

The product will last 1 year probably because of erosion or abrasion. It may not have the hardness or strength of a full blown coating, but that doesnt mean the bond to paint is weak. So if it can bond to the paint and we can get a coating to bond to it, the coating should protect it, until the coating wears out.

I mean whats the durability of primered paint? Who cares right?

    Good point

Then i guess the questiom becomes, does pbl bond to it properly?

Re: Should I Essence before PBL?

There is someone around here who even used gloss coat with essence and it stuck, but I know they say only use GC right on the paint.

In my estimation essence makes everything better. I wouldnt hesitate to use it at all, and if a product doesnt bond to it, I would have a hard time even purchasing it, I like it that much.
