I`m not quite sure whether it`s lacquer or what that is traditionally used on hi-end audiophile speaker.

    Assume the base is MDF.

Anyhow, would or has anyone used any *detailing products* to polish out the marring on said surface.

In the old days there were a couple of posts about polishing black grand pianos. Don`t know if they are still around. I think they were successful!

Depending on the age, country of origin, brand, model, etc, etc, etc... the finish could be anything from cellulose lacquer to automotive urethane to powder coat.

Not that knowing the brand or model would help either, audio manufacturers don`t advertise the finishing processes.

Anyway, by and large paint is paint. If you look at finish polishing practices in the woodworking and musical instrument industries they tend to be rather similar to any other form of paint polishing.

I would add the caveat that even if the finish itself may respond just like auto paint, the substrate (MDF) doesn`t get along with water. So if you use water based products keep it to a light film just on the finish. Don`t go splashing it everywhere. Don`t let it get in cracks and crevices around the drivers or wiring cups.

And don`t let it get on your tweeters (unless you want everything to sound like it`s under a pillow).

Start in an inconspicuous spot with something really, really mild and see how it responds.
