My car is 12 years old and was neglected by the privious owner, the windshield is full of pits and is hard to see out of when driving int the sun.

Can I clean it up with normal paint compound/polish or is a glass specific product necessary?

I saw Glass Science Glass Scrub and my local parts store, is it worth a darn or should I try one of the offerings from Duragloss or DP?

Replace the windshield. You could spend as much as the windshield costs on various products and it would still look like crap.
