    that would work and i would just put the heavier items (gallons) on the bottom shelves...

    I`d opt for something more impermeable myself, but yeah, all you`d need is some kind of solid barrier.

    Some of these come with plastic inserts. I`ve used thin plywood myself.

    Probably a piece of formica, or something like that. But real answer: I`d use a different shelf for that application I have three different types of shelves in my shop, each has pros/cons.
