Its not called DETAILing for nothing
I have used Eagle One Never Dull with great results. You rub it on, then wipe it off. I have had excellent results using it on chrome wheels, exhaust tips, step bars, etc.
I never used steel wool. I have heard it works, but can also scratch the hell out of it too.

Simichrome is a great metal cleaner. Let it set up for a few and you`re good to go. I`ve also used Meguiar`s with good results.
one grand chrome polish is a good one...really breaks down grime fast and efficiently...use it after claying for an incredible shine!
I generally treat chrome like paint, although I do still have some metal polishes on the shelf. The clay bar is great for removing a lot of baked-in specks, followed by your favorite polish. I do really like Clearkote`s metal polish, and Poorboy`s Pro polish is good as well. If you decide on abrasive over chemical, I love Menzerna IP and FPII.
I avoid steel wool, but that`s a personal preference. I tried #0000 on a chrome exhaust tip once and it scratched the surface. Could`ve been cheap plating, but since then I`ve stayed away from it. Some tips (stainless too) take more elbow grease, but I`ve never really had complaints with the results. I have seen the results of a jeweler`s rouge kit on embedded stains, and the next time I see one on sale I`ll have to take the plunge.
Cogito Ergo Idiot.
P21S polishing soap is awesome for this, IMO
I have used Meguiar`s NXT all metal polish with great results on the exhuast tips of my truck. It also leaves behind a layer of protection.

Megs mirror glaze All metal polish #26 does a good job.
Menzerna Polishing Cream Metal Polish is great !!!!

I also use Nevr dull followed by a good buffing with a lint free cloth. Two or three times a year, I wax them with a couple good coat of 476s. For months afterwards, all I need to do to clean the tips is wipe them with a microfiber mitt (I keep one just for that.)
I use Brasso Metal Polish. Available everywhere and works great.

I use Chrome polish from english custom, Hot Environment Chrome Polish . After the pipes are cleaned, I use Deep Chrome, Deep Chrome (8oz.) in All Products - www.deepfinish.com. Leaves the tips looking very nice.
sorry to hijack the thread, but what about paint overspray? would it be safe to use steel wool on that? i dont think metal polish can get that out on its own.
clay will get the overspray, I still have nightmares about when I found the tan wrought-iron paint all over my dark custom motorcycle. . .
On the car tips and the motorcycle, after cleaning I`ve put PB wheel wax. Holds up pretty well to the higher temps
