I cannot make a left turn to park into a perpendicular (not angled) spot. Am I going to die?

yikes, when did this happen. You wond die but you will scuff up your bumper and the bumpers and mirrors of others!

maybe you need to go to skip barber driving school for new drivers.

unless i dont get what your talking about, isn`t this kind of thing on your basic drivers test?

you turn right a little bit, then turn in (left) hard and then counter steer and your in

Maybe you would find it easier to back into the parking space... you know, ricer style.
A well-prepared surface will make any wax look good.

ricer style ?? i do that all the time and i`m the complete opposite of a ricer

anyway, if you want to go nose first i`d recommend either what the guy above said, stay as far away from the spot as you can (away from the cars parked next to the spot) and then just turn left... you have to judge it good so you don`t the cars around you... OR pass up your spot a little, turn left, go like you`re going to hit the car to the right of your spot, then back up and turn the wheel to the right to straighten the car out... and go straight into your spot... did that make any sense??

When I had Driver`s Ed. (this was back when you had to pedal the car with your feet, like on the Flintstones), we used compact cars. Do they use huge trucks and SUV`s now? If not, maybe that is the problem...

You`re talking about paralell parking on a one way street, correct? But on the left hand side.

It`s more difficult, just becasue you`re not use to judging your angles from that direction. Approach it the same way you would parking on the right hand side, but reverse your turns. It takes a while to learn and be completely comfortable with it. I had to do it a lot when I lived in Charleston - limited parking opportunities and a lot of one-way streets. One of the main areas where there was left side parking was the Market area - which is a big tourist area. Saw a lot of tourists try to get into the left side spots and give up after a few tries- it`s not real common I guess.

I too am curious why? Are you driving a Suburban? I`ve seen soccer moms spend 10 minutes parking their rigs like that and come very very close to gouging the parked cars :soscared:

I would recommend the right to go left approach. You turn slightly right and then make the turn left. It gives you a wider turn and opens up more maneuvering room. Just make sure nobody is on your right when you start this, ive heard some horror stories.

Whatever you do don`t go driving on vacation in England until you sort this out!

so you can park on the right, just now the left??

i had to learn how to park in a old old Ford Tarus and a Murcury Villager(with the beeping reverse), not parking my accord is a breeze.

Go buy an old ford tarus and find an empty parking lot to practice in. The car should cost under $600. and as a bonus you can use it to practice your rotary skills

its common..sounds like the problem your are encountering is because of the longer wheelbase..when parking to the right its easier for you to gauge distance..im guessing that when you park to the left, you drivers sides ends up to close to the car on the left.. you can try starting the turn later or getting as far right as possible allowing you to make a wider turn.

edit** i love the drawing :getdown
