    S10 Bodywork Part 2

Unhappy with the results of my spray bomb attempt, it was time to go for broke and break out my spray-gun (next weekend anyways...). $200 in supplies later, it`s time to start the prep-work. Starting off with the passenger side today since it seems to be the worst side.

Took off the bottom graphic and marking out the dents:

    Checking out the rust spots:

Well that was not what I expected, maybe it`ll be ok...

    Nope...

Not proud of this, but it is a $3000 truck. Fiber-strand filler. It will get the old rockers cut off and new ones welded in next year. This is a low-budget project right now. After welding and fabricating all week for work, there was no way I was making myself do it.

    Prepping for regular body filler:

Filled and ready for filler primer:

    Ready for block sanding:

    Bonus, my helper for today:

More to come tomorrow. The wheelwells has slight surface rust that was grinded off and primed with a rust primer. Undercoating will be applied to rockers and all lower surfaces. Lights, trim, mirrors, and door handles will be removed this time. At this moment I`m leaving them in just in case.

    Re: S10 Bodywork Part 2

Pretty cool. After H.S. I wanted to be a body guy. I bondo`d my s10 myself and rattle canned it and it looked pretty good. I brought my nova to the body shop to get a 1/4 panel replaced and the guy saw my s10, said it looked pretty flat and what not. Then he said there isnt any money in body work until you have 10 or 20 years under your belt or you open a shop. Then he asked how much I thought all the equipment in his shop cost, I dunno alot I said.

Long story short I dumped body work like a hot potato.

    Slowly getting there.

Passenger side all sanded ready to go for the most part:

Now we got some big ol` dents we gotta pop out.

    Not too bad...

A coat of fiberstand and then some regular filler ready to be knocked down:

So upon doing some sanding, my spray bomb work screwed me hard. It gummed up so hard it was ridiculous. Put a 40 grit disk on the sander and went at it:

It pretty much is going to set me back a day. I ran out of finishing pads, so I had to prime the spots to prevent rust.

I did get some undercoating on the lowers. I put it on a little too thick, but it`s the bottom. If you want to get that close and nitpick so sue me, lol.

Rocker repair don`t look too bad. That hole might last a couple winters, but it will give me a chance to save up for a new welder. The buzz box just don`t cut it for bodywork.

Beer count on this project so far: 9

This is where we`re at now folks. I hope to get the color on it next weekend.

Sneak peek before the wetsand. There`s a little bit of dirt in it considering it was painted in the garage.

Didn`t get a chance to clean it up too much, but I did get it back together and put the simple pinstripe on.

Beater, no more. How close do you have to get to notice the paint isn`t from a booth? If inside 2 feet you are really the man. Got any reflection shots up close?

I`m very impressed with your work. I think many detailers would make great body guys/painters. Patience and a good eye for details.

It`s more of a 10` away honestly. There was very little dirt surprisingly, but with the way I mixed the clear (to the instructions) it didn`t lay down as good as it could. I had to reclear the fender and for grins an giggles mixed the clear "hot." It went down perfect with little orange peel, go figure, lol. There`s plenty of clear on the truck to make it look show worthy if I wanted to spend more time on it, but I just knocked it down a little bit and hit it with the heavy compound. It knocked the gloss off, but I did that to match the rest of the truck. I might play around with it in the spring, but for now the truck matches.

Nizmo- This thread is WayBackMachine-ing me to my younger years! Really enjoying watching your progress.

It`ll be interesting to see how long the Rust Remediation holds up, I bet it`ll last longer than you`d expect so that welding might not happen next year after all.
