i think they sell #16 in boat catalogs. and the car polish wont do much for taking out defects since boat coatings are so much harder and thicker then cars. but it SHOULD work. never tried it...
This has been discussed before. Boats have a much different finish than do cars. Use meguiars boat line of products on boats. You can order them, or if you live near the water you should be able to find them locally. I have bought them at my local auto store (advanced auto parts maybe?).
yes automotive products can be used on boats. Well most of them. Gelcoat is nothing like paint however. It is 50x thicker, and stronger. You will need some strong compounds, and really good rotary skills to get a perfect polish on a boat. As for #16, it works very well, but is quite the pain in the a** to wax a boat with it by hand. What i recommend, and use about a bottle a day of is Collinite Fleet Wax. It is a real thin wax that can be applied using the PC, and it wipes clean very easy. The stuff also holds up very well, it is detergent proof, and seems to handle the harshness of being in the water and direct sun very well.
Just like paint in the auto industry, no two boat manufacturers will have the same gel coat. Some gel coats are soft and others are on the verge of being brittle.
Also, some boats actually have paint over the gel coat so it is much like working on auto paint. Other times the color is throughout the gel coat. Automotive products will do a half decent job but if I were you, I would go and buy products designed for marine use, especially if you are going to be working on boats kept in the water (biodegradable).

Two Words for Boats - Yacht Brite, Hands down the best there is. More user friendly then Collinite, easier to use and remove, more durable.
