My tip is a safety one. Make sure your emergency roadside kit is full. Check your med kit and make sure all bandages/tape are still serviceable after the summer heat. Make sure you check your tires for proper inflation and check tread. After all safety checks are done apply your favorite wax/sealant/coating. Be safe.

I always make sure I put a fresh coat of a glass coating, new wiper blades and check tires every week instead of every two weeks the rest of the year. Visibility and handling are the most important things during wet weather. Also of course I put on a new LSP on the non coated car before a storm so I can watch the beading.

Re: RUPES Best Off-Season Prep Tip Giveaway

This is what I follow every year:

    1. Leave an emergency kit and some blankets in the trunk. I also keep an air pump, torque wrench and breaker bar if I need to look after my tires. I`m also registered with a local roadside assistance service if I need a tow.

    2. Apply a glass sealant or coating to your windows. It won`t prevent the windows from freezing but it can stay cleaner longer and provides more visibility. Also top up your windshield fluid.

    3. Apply Nextzett Rubber Care Stick Gummi Pflege to your rubber weather strips. It will help prevent them from drying and cracking. Also gives UV protection from the sun.

    4. Check all your exterior lights to make sure they are working. In a snowstorm, visibility will be very low and others need to see you.

    5. Buy a scratch-free snow brush. You want to minimize any chances of putting swirls on your car but you MUST clear the roof of your car for safety reasons. A $30-$40 brush will save you polishing the roof next season.

    6. I would recommend a paint sealant or coating for winter months as they last longer than a conventional wax. I know I don`t want to be out waxing during winter.

    7. Search in your area for local coin washes. You want to visit them for a quick rinse when there is too much buildup of salt and dirt on your car. When the temperature is above 0 degrees celcius, I go immediately and rinse the bottom of my car. For my current DD, I have not seen a speck of rust (aside from bolts) after winter.

Re: RUPES Best Off-Season Prep Tip Giveaway

Before any appearance processes, I attack the mechanicals. My DD`s are parked outside all winter long in PA, so tires, battery and all fluids are checked and changed where necessary. Weatherstrips, latches, hinges and locks are also checked, cleaned and lubed. After that, appearance and protection can then get their fair share of attention. On the cars without coatings, Duragloss, Collinite and Finish Kare are all used liberally. Little or no finish correction is done in the fall, as it`s inevitable that correcting for winter abuse will be necessary in the spring.
Unlike the shovel, sand, blankets, food rations and other stuff recommended by the "experts", my trunk is packed with the essentials any Autopian would carry to be able to take advantage of any window of opportunity for a maintenance wash. Two ounces of rinseless wash in 35mm film cans, a bucket, a pre-treatment pump sprayer, bunches of MF`s, window cleaner and spray wax drying aids are always loaded and ready.

Thanks, Rupes and Vega for the opportunity, even though I do hate to be reminded the frigid season is only a couple months away!

Re: RUPES Best Off-Season Prep Tip Giveaway

I like to make sure that the oil change is done and the antifreeze is in great shape. Checking the hoses and such.
Making sure the tires are in good shape well. Getting the tire chains in order.
Checking the battery terminals and cleaning them.
It will get a good bath and polish and wax, sealant or coating. If I am bord and have time, hahahah, it week get all 3. Good glad polishing and coating aswell. . Cool contest, thanks
