How far will you travel for the job?

I courious how far (mobile detailer of course) you will travel to get to your appointment?
I`m asking this because I had a customer today (computer repair) and she lives 40 mi. away (on Long Island thats about an hour + trip).
I don`t normally charge for my travel time.
But I spent about 2 hours on the road for a 1 hours worth of work
(I did charge a little more just to cover fuel, but not much)

I am more curious if it`s just me or if other people will travel a good distance for the work??

30 minutes is my limit. More than that and it had better be an all day job that will compensate for my time. I won`t drive an hour each way for one car. Maybe 3 or 4 cars, but one just isn`t worth it.

Anyways, it goes per customer, but usually under an hour. If there are more cars, I might go a little further.

That is far TRAVELING depends on how many jobs or how much work is involved.Does it pay to travel that far for a full detail well what`s the markup,are you busy,can you get other business.If I have to travel that far for a job I tell the people (if they are nice) leave your keys in the car that way I can get started early and done early.I have no problem working on a car at 6am and having the rest of the day for other business.Not to mention that the roads out there are empty in the early Sunday moning hours so traveling goes a bit faster.

Hi Sean,
I guessed people missed that part of the original thread. I wasn`t going there to detail a car ... I was there for computer repair.
But even at the rate that I get for "in home/office service" it almost doesn`t seem worth it.

For some of my customers I am the only one that they trust...They just happened to move out to God`s country
I have worked on their stuff for years!!!

Even tough it`s not detailing... the same principle applies.
I was wondering how everyone else deals with a situation like that.

I will usually tell them up front...It`s an extra $10+ for anything over 30 mins...Or something to that effect.

I just thought about this today. I`m thinking 30mi or less is free and .25c/mi over. I figure if I`m traveling over 30mi to do a car they really want ME to work on it and won`t care paying extra.

I Tell my customers to come tome. i do all work at my house.
I provide exceptional service and they find it worthwhile to come to me.
I don`t want to go to them cuz they don`t see your travel time as an opportunity cost of for gone $$..

I would only make the trip if I got to do the computer repair and a detail. Then it might be worth it.

I think I may just have to put a min. on customers where I have to travel too far.
Thank god this time, the customer is going to meet me at my office, to save me the trip because she knows how far it is.
