What compounds and pads to start out with?

I have chickened out and am going to get a PC DA. I have been looking at the edge 2000 pads and poorboys products. I cant afford to just "get one of everything" What stuff will I need for a good start? Looking to do some minor compounding and polishing?

IMO, You are on the right track.
You don`t need a lot of products to do a good job.
A swirl remover - A polishing pad to use it.
    A paint cleaner/polish - Another polishing pad.
A final wax/sealant - A finishing pad to apply it.

Actually, the only time I feel I need the PC is for swirl removal.
The cleaner/polish and the final coat can be done easily by hand.
As time goes on, and you have the funds, you will no doubt have more products and pads. Will you really need them? Probably not.

A good starter kit would be the following:

Pads - 3 polishing, one finishing
    Products -

    SSR2.5
    Polish with Carnauba
    EX or EX-P

As you develop, you can add more waxes, polishes, glazes, etc.

Using Edge and Poorboy`s products, I`d put together the following starter set for paint -

    SSR2.5 with Edge green
    SSR1 with Edge blue
    PwC with Edge blue
    EX-P with Edge white
