Inside FLEX Part 1: Interview with FLEX`s Bob Ec

Inside FLEX Part 1: An Interview with Bob Eichelberg

Autopia-CarCare dives deep into the world of FLEX with a THREE PART series, starting with an exclusive interview of Bob Eichelberg of FLEX North America. Bob has been in the parts and machine business for over 30 years. Here is a short background:

Bob graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1976, and worked as a district manager until 1984 for Skil Power Tools. He has then worked for Shop-Vac, Porter Cable and FLEX. He is currently the president of FLEX North America. To say this gentleman knowns tools would be an understatement!

Autopia: What separates FLEX from other polisher manufacturers?

FLEX: First, and foremost, FLEX listens to our customers. Our tools are a direct result of what our customers ask for. We do not manufacturer tools then tell people why they need them, instead we listen and build the tools that our customers need.

FLEX is at the forefront of new technological designs. We constantly create and implement the newest technologies to improve our performance and durability. We also make it a point to create tools that are easy to use and comfortable. Comfort is the key in obtaining the best results.

In addition, our electronics are among the most sophisticated and advanced in the world. All FLEX electric power tools feature spring loaded FLEX LongLife carbon brushes, highly developed air flow systems, temperature sensors and overload protection.

Autopia:What/which is the first FLEX tool you ever used?

FLEX:The Flex Wet Polisher, which we invented for polishing granite and marble in kitchens, baths and floors. It enabled the user to get a professional result without dust. Actually, Flex invented the grinder…..90 years ago in Germany.

Autopia: FLEX has built a steady reputation in the United States. In this world of global economies, we still like to purchase products from companies who keep American`s employed. How many employees does FLEX-North America employee?

FLEX: We have grown and continue to grow tremendously. We now employ 25 people directly plus our product reps, far more than most American tool manufacturers.

Autopia: We have heard that FLEX has changed ownership. Are there any plans to move production from Germany?

FLEX: Absolutely not! This seems to be a common rumor from those who would benefit from our failure. In fact the new owners spent over a million dollars, updating the buildings in Germany! They added air conditioning and updated heating system to name a few updates. Actually, they are mostly interested in our distribution in Europe.

Autopia: Are there any new and exciting products that FLEX is working on for the automotive industry?

FLEX: Everyone, please be patient, we have been in an acquisition mode for the past 3 years. Finally, settled and moving on. We will have some serious announcements at SEMA Show! You know, anything we come up with will be class-leading, innovative and built 100% in Germany!

I like Rupes but flex will be my no.1. My first real NEW polisher was a 3403 (Which is now owned by Glen E, a true testament to how reliable their machines are), flex definitely has a place in my heart and always in my garage... *plugs Pe & 3401 in... grins*

If you go below the equator, it rotates the other direction.

I do not think there is that much technology that prevents a company from competing.

It is more a will (money) to do the R&D work and production expenses related to bringing them to market. The detailing market is not that large in the grand scheme of things..Porter Cable (owned by Stanley Black and Decker) never seemed to think so. This is why the Rupes can be expensive (smaller volume to cover all the expenses) besides the pure manufacturing parts cost that many focus on.
