I heard from a member here on Detail City that there is a detail business here in Honolulu, HI that keeps their used clay bars for 6 months. Hmmmmm, I figured that if run a established detail business with hired help, I would think you would see about 15-20 cars a day (5 days a week). Say out of those cars you clay 3 cars...OMG

    Calcuations:
    3 cars x 5 days = 15 cars clayed
    15 cars clayed x 4 weeks = 60 cars clayed per month
60 cars clayed per month x 6 months = 360 cars clayed after 6 months.

How can that be? I would hate to see these cars.

    With Aloha,
    Ranney

It has been my experience that most IFO (industrial fall-out -- i.e. rail dust, rust spots, exhaust soot, all things that go up and must come down, etc.) is only found on the top surfaces. I have rarely had to clay any vehicle below the belt line unless it has been subjected to serious over-spray from a misguided painter.

wow, amazingly, that makes a lot of sense to me. so, you only concentrate on the upper parts of the car, and the sides, not really the bottom bottom of the car. makes sense to me.

yes top and angled surfaces on the car including glass since contaminants have an easier time to migrate and settle on.sides *I* dont worry so much since its easier to clean so i just use a good cleaner like AIO or since you like to use PB then you can probably use their polish as a cleaner by itself.on the bottom surfaces like the bottoms of bumpers and such then i would just use a tar remover if their is build up of that on their.

To me...the areas I need to clay the most are the hood and side skirt areas which have a lot of rain and mud spray from the other cars when it rains (which it has a lot, recently here in Hawaii)...

so would it make sense to Wash-AIO-Clay-etc instead of Wash-Clay-AIO?

I like the idea of polishing before using clay but it seems to me that removing polish residues is an easier task if the surface is clayed. Anyone agree?

BTW, I use claymagic on my customer`s cars and Pinnacle on my car.

I like to clay between the washing and polishing steps. I`d rather have the clay pick up as much embedded debris as possible before it winds up in any of my PC pads.

As for brands, I prefer the clay manufactured by Erazer (Mother`s, Poorboy`s, etc.) as I think it`s a bit easier to knead. Clay Magic clay isn`t as soft, but the end result is equally good.

I agree with marj that the claymagic is tougher to knead that the mother`s clay bar. I still personally prefer the claymagic because I can feel it removing the contaminants more than I can with the Mother`s. Both good claybars though and mother`s is much more pliable.

Has anyone used TOL`s claybar. I just got one and it is huge! I haven`t got a chance to use it yet and wanted to know if anyone else has.
