I dont know the answers to all of those questions. What I do know is that after trying several different dressings I have settled on PB Trim Restorer. Not too glossy or greasy and easy application. Lasts a long time and attracts minimal dirt. Give it a try. You will like it. I apply, let sit for half hour then wipe down with MF. Gives a "new" tire look as opposed to a shiny greasy look.
I`ve been using PB TR and have had great results, I`ve also usd his bold & bright that is a glossy shine. Another product that I use is by P&S car care products, its called wipe and shine. Goes on easy and is fairly shinny.

A water based dressing that I like and seems to last at least two weeks is Einszett Tiefenpfleger.
Personally, i have used Black Magic tire dressing ( i beleive its silicon based)...and more recently i switched to Meg`s GC High endurance dressing, very nice results.

For me the dressing that seemed to last the longest (up to four washes, only pressure washing the wheels) was BAF-PRO`s S-85. It is solvent based, does contain silicone and is high gloss.
I`ll add that I found having more than one dressing on hand helps in customer satisfaction... some like the high-sheen-wet tire look, while others prefer to have a no dressing look. It also might be a good idea to have at least one that is Body-Shop safe (no silicone) if you do work at or for a body shop.

I like to use water based products only so I can only offer suggestions on those products:
Eimann Fabrik Black Opal tire dressing - leaves nice glossy finish/minimal sling/lasts almost two weeks
303 - leaves a natural look not glossy after drying/no sling that I noticed/lasts around two weeks with no rain or snow/somewhat pricey because requires more product from my experience
PB Bold-n-Bright - leaves fairly glossy finish thats not so overwhelming(I prefer a more natural look), minimal sling/last about two weeks in my experience
