Yellow paint is not a curse!!

Okay...now that I`ve posted my complaining thread on my black Mariner...check out the new hood I just finished for my wfes GT `stang.

This is the Cervinis `Stalker` hood. My dad helped me out (thanks Dad, couldn`t have done it without ya!!) and we block-sanded it all down, primed it, wet-sanded it, primed it again, and went at it with a little more wet-sanded to slick it out real nice.

Then I hit `er with about 4 good coats of DuPont Chromabase zinc-yellow. Once that cured, I layed 3 nice, thick coats of 7500 Chroma Clear over top of that.

Once she dried, she was wet sanded with 1500 grit to eliminate a small bit of orange-peel and a couple small dust specks. Oh...and I had two small runs. ;-)

Anyway, here are a couple pics of the hood...

Unfortunately, I don`t have any better pics of the car overall with the hood, but here`s a shot of the car from the rear as a whole, so you can see what the whole car looks like...

Let me know what you think. I was overly happy with it. The hood buffed out real slick and shiny. And thanks to this site I`ve been washing and drying it properly, so it has no annoying swirl issues, unlike my black Mariner.

Now thats a nice looking hood. I also like the license plate, it`s living up to the name now too.

I`ve always wanted to learn how to paint but not for a living. Do you have a booth that you work in or do you make a temporary booth? What type of spray gun do you use? Is the whole car the zinc-yellow or did you just get lucky with the paint match? Sorry for all of the questions but it seems like you have a lot of first hand experiences with painting that I`d like to give a shot some day.

Painting is a lot of fun...but I will say that it is a ton of work.

My Dad, brother and I took a 14 week paint class a few years back. We`re all three into cars and all have always wanted to learn how to paint. This particular class was nothing but hands-on spraying 1 night a week for 14 weeks. I got to where I can lay metallics with no tiger striping...it was a great class!

Anyway...we just paint in one of our garages...this one was done at my house. I used Dad`s 6HP CRAFTSMAN compressor and my DeVilbiss gravity feed gun. We hung the hood upright from my garage door rails so I would get minimal dirt in it and went to town on it.

Oh, and by the way, this was my first paint job right after the class...

I like that yellow. There is sopme member on the Mustang forums that hates yellow because he can`t make it look as good as black. Last I saw, he wasnted to repaint the whole car black, or have a body shop spray on a coat of pearl.
