Can`t get light scratches and swirls out of paint after compounding

I have a black 2016 Mustang GT and the paint was in bad shape with lots of swirls and light scratches. I bought a DA polisher with a 6 inch orange cutting pad along with meguiars swirl remover 2.0 . I`ve done about 4 passes on speed 4-5 with the machine in a small area and the large circles of swirls are gone, after I buff it off I am left with"quarter sized" swirls when I shine a light on it as well as random light scratches. I cannot get these out no matter what I do. I also used Chemical Guys VSS and that did not help. The polish i`m using is the Meguiars polishing compound. I would appreciate if someone could steer me in the right direction on how to correct this.

    Welcome to the Forum !

Is this the product you have ?? --- https://www.autopia-carcare.com/meg-...l#.W3O1bc7Fj3g
If so, notice the scale on the left side of the bottle - it says the "cut" of this polish is 3 out of 10, so that means it is not going to be able to correct some things in most paintwork like what you have in yours..

You need something that has a higher number on that scale, that will be able to get all or most of those deeper defects out.. If you want to stay in the same brand "family", then this Meguiars product is easy to get -- https://www.autopia-carcare.com/megu...l#.W3O4zs7Fj3h

If you can send us the best pic you can take of that panel, it would help.. If not, that`s ok too..

I have had very limited success with anything C/Guys sells for paint correction..

It will also help if you can get as much - pad rotation - as possible from your Random Orbital - which one do you have ??

If you want to do this more efficiently, I would recommend getting a 5" backing plate and pads for that backing plate.. The smaller diameter backing plate and pad will rotate easier than that big one you have and will be able to get into tighter places easier as well..

If you cannot get these or do not want to, that`s ok, you can work with what you have.. It will just take longer and be harder to get that big pad into tight places..

You need at least 6 pads for correction and perhaps the same number for polishing after the correction phase.. They will be different colored pads..
You also need a good pad cleaner for those pads so you can wash them, get them to dry, and be able to use them again and again..

Also for your beautiful black paintwork, you need to have good microfiber towels if possible that will wipe it clean and not induce extra micro scratches or marring into the paint work, and of course, they need to be cleaned carefully and dried carefully so they will keep working efficiently and safely..

Yes that is the product I was using. Now I see why it wasn`t cutting the fine small swirls

The machine i`m using is the porter cable dual action polisher

Could I use meguiars m105 then m205 instead of the ultimate compound? What speed and what pressure should I be using on the machine?

Unless you`re familiar with the peculiarities of using M105, I`d skip that. M205 is pretty straightforward though.Megs M101 is a nice replacement for M105, easier to use but I think it only comes in 32oz bottles which is way more than you need.

Maybe a small bottle of Jescar Correcting Compound: https://www.autopia-carcare.com/jesc...l#.W3Q9jPlKi00

Is 105 too harsh for removing stubborn small swirls?

It is not about being to harsh it is about M105 having a slight learning curve that can lead to frustration. I would rather use Ultimate Compound even though it has less cut than M105. It is derived from M105. I would suggest you pick up a nice compound like Sonax Cut Max. Will make your life easier. M205 will do just fine as a finishing polish. I would recommend picking up Sonax Cut Max and Sonax EX 04-06 and you will be set. They can be purchased in small 8 oz bottles that will be enough to try out.
