You know, that`s probably true but we did use it on a Turbo`d Saleen I use to do the engine work on. Before that it was regular old masking tape. That`s actually the picture I see in my head when I think of this. Have used Speed Tape also (not the aluminized kind) Thinkin` painters tape is easiest to remove and and perhaps the best recommendation given today`s tapes.

I remember hearing when I was younger (much younger) that some guys would use Meguiar`s Fast Wax spray wax before racing (70`s & early 80`s)

What about a product like Griot`s Bug barricade? Griots Garage Bug Barricade 22oz.
You would apply it beforehand while your car is still clean, then I would think it would act to help keep rubber and film from bonding as well to the paint. Then you could use the Mothers RRR or Griot`s track spray to help break down any rubber that may have had a chance to bond.
For maximum protection, tape would be the way to go. Rubber, even if liquid as it`s burnt off the back tires, is still going to be an object flying against your paint which has the chance to leave scratches as it passes. Not to mention any dirt/debris that`s being kicked up in the process. I remember cleaning rubber marks off the front of my track car, and after removing the big marks you`d see fine scratches from the impact of the rubber.
I never thought it was too tough to get off paint it was the wheel wells that was a pita
