What can go under/over a coating?

What can go under/over a coating? For example, does a coating have to be applied to the bare paint? or can it be applied over a "pure polish" or glaze? Can a wax, synthetic or natural be applied over it, or will the petroleum distillates break it down? This is for coatings in general but the one I used specifically is Mckee`s 37

    Thanks!

For best results apply to bare paint or you can use CarPro Essence before coating application. You can put whatever you like over a coating, but it may not adhere to the coating. I would not worry about a wax or sealant breaking down a coating as a coating is much more durable than a wax or sealant (after it cures). The only thing I would put on top of a coating would be a topper made exclusively for topping a coating. Also wash a coating with a soap that does not leave anything behind so not to interfere with the coatings protection and dirt repelling properties.

With Mckee`s just stick with their coating prep polish or a prep wipe such as gtechniq panel wipe or even N914 as a panel wipe mixture.

I`ve read mixed results with Mckee`s and essence.

How about using Duragloss 501 (marine version) as a prep for Mckee`s? I`m thinking it will clean the surface slightly better than McKee`s own coating prep?

I use Mothers step 1. Its a great OTC paint cleaner at a reasonable price. It leaves paint squeaky clean but I still IPA afterwards.

Not familiar with using DG501. But if it leaves anything behind then you don`t want that or make more work for yourself. Or just use a regular polish followed by some sort of prep wipe.

I`m not entirely sure either but I get what you are saying by sticking with a product that cancels out the IPA wipe down procedure (which I totally agree with). My car is fairly new and while it looks like it doesn`t need much prep at all, you just don`t know until you get started and have it under some good lighting.
