    Clearcoat failure thoughts

I would like some opinions on hood and if you guys think the situation with my clearcoat has gotten worse or remained the same.

So here is picture set one. Taken April 21, notice it`s a bit cloudy out. I`m talking about the white splat that looks like bird poop (it isn`t).

Now here is picture set two taken today. To me it appears that lower left corner has gotten worse. It also seems that the upper right has gotten worse.

Now here is calendar of things I`ve done to the car
    Polish / Clay / Wax - 5/1/17
    Wash 5/7/17
    Wash 5/14/17
    Rewaxed hood 5/17/17
    Wash 5/24/17
    Painted grill black 5/27/17
Took photo of spot on hood again 5/29/17

So to me it seems in about a months time the spot has gotten slightly worse. Does anyone else see this or does anyone think it`s purely lightning that makes it appear worse? Is there anything I can do to make it stop or fix it? I know I could repaint it but I`m strapped for cash.

Only way to fix it is repaint. I suppose you could try a little light sanding, touch up and all that. Won`t look good but might be a little less hard to look at.

Do you think it`s gotten worse when comparing the photos?

That`s hard to say with the picture quality. Certainly hasn`t gotten better, and I would not expect that it will.

    This might help

I`d say yes, it`s getting bigger. As clear coat rot tends to.

Darn. Is it worth going over it with a touch up pen or no?

Short term, yes. Long term, no.

    Re: Clearcoat failure thoughts

Eh, the following merely repeats what I`ve been saying on other threads, so those of you with great memories can just ignore it. Once more:

I have worse failure on parts of the `93 Audi and it hasn`t gotten appreciably worse since I got the car 9 years ago. IMO if ya have to really *study* it to gauge any progression it`s not all that critical (though OK, you never really know..).

Noting that I didn`t even do this much on the Audi and it`s still fine...

DON`T SAND IT. Just clean it with a pre-paint prep solvent and touch it up. Let that cure for a while and LSP it with something UV-resistant. Try to keep it out of the sun as best you can while you just live with it like that until you can get it repainted (if you decide it really needs that). Quit thinking about it

Seriously...I have areas that`re down to the Pearl layer; some down to the basecoat; some down to the factory primer; some down to lightly-corroded E-Coat. No significant progression over 9 years. Ditto for the [messed] up areas on the Tahoe, some of which are down to surface-rusted bare metal. Both vehicles are used hard (consider Ohio winters) but get compliments from even serious car-guys all the time, who always rave about how great they look (two guys currently want to buy that POS Tahoe due to it`s "great condition"!). IME, which certainly might be unique, so sure.. !YMMV!....this stuff just isn`t as critical as one might think. If it`s a Heap Big Deal then spend for the paintwork, otherwise just do the above and keep an eye on it.
