Did I ruin my side view mirror?

    Hey folks.

So I have become accustomed to using a yellow or white pad on a small Rupes (duetto?) with late stage polish. Done it on 5 of my cars so far and it worked great.

This time, I did it and created a halo effect on the mirror - the center where I started is normal but around it is a blue/violet ring and then the perimeter has a different reflective quality. Not looking good. I started in one spot but started to move it after 1-2 seconds.

The pad was not hot and I didn`t work it for long. Speed was maybe 4 out of 6.

not having success uploading a pic at the moment but will try later.

    Anyone see this happen?

It could be oils left over from the polish. Try removing with a good glass cleaner. Oils will cause that rainbow effect.

Will wait for pics before i guess. But i usually ipa or apc wipe after polish to see whats going on. Heat isnt necessary to "burn" through paint.

The coating on side mirrors is pretty thin. Hopefully you did not go through the coating.

Are you talking about the mirror itself or the case that holds the mirror? If your talking about the mirror itself like in your photo, being a film, I would not use any abrasive polish as it will scratch the film.

Looks permanently damaged. I don`t believe any residue would look like that.

What vehicle is this on? Might have some sort of coating on the mirrors for glare or fluid inside.

From what i learned in the past, side mirror glass is really more like a plastic. It will scratch and mar easy. I have mine coated with Mckess glass coating. And also I am very carefull when washing that area.

I was thinking the same, auto dim may screwed up. May be a static charge left from the friction.

I did the same thing to my old car when I first started detailing. It looked exactly like that and when I kept trying to fix it it burned through completely and looked faded. Cost me like 30-40 bucks to replace it IIRC.

I coated my trucks mirrors with CQUK and it turned them a slightly amberish color. No one but me can tell, but Ill never do that again.
