well you can protect what you do have with a monthly waxing. Thats why the clearcoat starts to peel in the 1st place . UV rays do the most harm.

    Re: Clear coat peeling

Once the clear coat starts peeling I`d say you have a problem. The paint hasn`t been protected well up to this point and the damage has been done. The only way to keep it from peeling more is to sand it back. It will still look like crap, but at least it won`t get worse. I would suggest taking it to a body shop to have that work done on it.

You need to protect your paint from UV rays if you want to keep the clear coat from peeling. Start waxing your car more often or using a sealant that lasts a bit longer. You can`t neglect the paint and then be surprised when it starts to fall off the car. I don`t know if you have had the vehicle since `98 or not, but whoever had it the longest didn`t do a great job of protecting the paint. I would start now by protecting the paint that isn`t peeling. Likely you have a lot of oxidation that needs to be cleaned off the rest of it. You definitely need to get it polished up and protected if you want to avoid having this damage spread.

    Re: Clear coat peeling

I was wondering about the clear coat bottle.
I`m not sure--this is not a rec--but if you do, get 2k clear coat, your auto supply dealer will know what that means. Clean the area with a Wax & Grease remover. If you have a buffer, lightly wet sand the edges of the peeling (very lightly) to feather them a bit and buff them back.
When you spray, you`ll just protect from further damage--you`ll still see the edges.
Talk to a body shop, get a couple of estimates first on repairs. It might be within reason.

    Re: Clear coat peeling

It`s more than clear coat that you will need. The exposed paint will have faded quite a bit more than the area with clear on it still. You will likely need new base coat too. Unless you have an airbrush then this isn`t something I would suggest doing yourself. You can`t brush on what needs to be done. Take it to a body shop and they`ll do it up right for you.

As suggested here I would have a body shop look at it and see what the cost is to repair the peeled areas.....I know that`s not what you want to hear but that`s really the best advice.
