turtle wax f21 super protectant review and facts.

well as i tagged along the other day to walmart, i stopped by the car section of course. naturally looking for good otc products that dont get any fame (armorall for example). i stumbled upon "turtle wax f21 super protectant".

sprayed a little bit out to see if it was a familiar milky waterbased texture, and it indeed was. so i bought it. im a big fan of waterbased dressings for many reasons.

one of the reasons being cleaning. u can easily clean dressing off without need of apc or what not. another reason is no slinging. dry to the touch, and less dirt attraction.

application is very easy. spray 3-4 sprays onto a sponge of u`re choice (swipe, pva, dish spnge, ect), and wipe on. it wipes on very milky and white, so u have to let it dry for 5 minutes.

when i came back after wiping it on, the dressing had completely soaked into the tire.

the best way i can describe the look of the tire, is "a lot of shine, but low gloss". something different i dont get.

most waterbased dressings give u a sheen, with low gloss.

most petroleum based dressings offer alot of gloss, lots of shine, and a wet look.

this product didnt. it gave me an in-between type of look, that is favorable to me, depending on my mood.

when i was all done with the dressing, i was very much impressed, so i decided to read the back of the bottle fully. one of the things it states is that its water-resistant. to me its, not a big deal to have a dressing that resist water, when as soon as it rains,. theres no point in having glossy tires if u`re paint looks like crap and all water-spotty.

but the fact that it claims its waterressistant makes me believe that its not a pure waterbased dressing. so i called up turtlewax and asked. they faxed me over an msds sheet as they didnt have a clue of what i was asking. in the sheet it states:

the chemical family as:mixture: water, SILICONE, additives

so it isnt a pure waterbased dressing, which kinda turns me away. the product states not to brown your tires. this could be true as its not a PURE silicone dressing either. so yeah.

there are a lot of silicone dressings people use and get great results from, i.e: eagle one wet tire shine.

so for those of u who dont mind the silicone in dressings and want some durabilty, i highly suggest f21 from turtle wax, as the shine and gloss is just about perfect for those low pro tires.

another mixture dressing im looking into is AM superdress it.

but like i said, only time can tell, and ill keep ya posted.

The Turtle Wax probably is a water based dressing. The presence of silicone does not determine if a dressing is water based or not. Most of the products we use contain silicone, even the waxes and sealents.

The reason a dressing is water based is becuase it uses water as the carrier for the other ingredients whereas a solvent based dressing uses solvent as the carrier (label usually says "contains petroleum distillates"). If your bottle of TW doesn`t say that then it is water based.

It the other ingredients that produce the shine, so it looks like TW has engineered a shine that`s between most water based and solvent based products.

    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Yep, what Frank said. There are water based and pd based silicone products.
As an aside, IIRC, this stuff will make floors slippery if you decide to spray it on the tires and let it soak in that way (from the overspray that settles on the floor from the mist). Also, pretty hard to get the floor to be not slippery without chemical or abrasive assistance.

aha! so why exactly is it that petroleum disilates are bad for rubber. why is it that they brown, if the same ingredients (silicones being one of them) are carried in waterbased dressings as well...

"Silicones" covers a wide spectrum. Different silicones for different products, different results/reactions.

Big Leegr is correct. There are many different silicones for many different things. Some are good for rubber and some are not. The problem with the petroleum distillates Joyriide is that they break down rubbber over time. To be honest you would probably wear out your tires on a daily driver before the dressing did anything major.

Polydimethylsiloxane is a silicone, is that basic resin of all of your fancy 303`s, Meg`s #40s, etc. My guess is that the the silicone in F21 is the same PDMS redsin used in all other water based dressings. Water based just means it uses the water as the solvent/carrier.

Unhappy Re: turtle wax f21 super protectant review and facts.

here are the pictures as promised... im including both sun and shade shots.

notice how the dressing give a lot of shine, but minimal gloss. it doesnt look wet, but it looks extremely black.

thats one of the things that attracts me a lot to it.

i like the look of shiney tires on low profile, but cant stand it when they look oily or glossy. this gives me what i want. atleast until my mood changes i guess.

    enjoy!

i got new tires by the way? like em? please give me a comment on them.
