Personal opinion. Get a 5" backing plate rather than the 6". IMO, it works much better with the 6.5" pads which are very common.Originally Posted by jayincali

Ok, I was thinking that I may want the pad to be bigger that the backing plate. So I`ll go with a 5" plate, and 6 - 6.5" pad

What is the benefit/drawback of using a pad bigger than your backing plate?Originally Posted by CharlesW
I remember reading something about pads tearing if you used one (bigger or smaller) than the backing plate....
The first thing to be careful of is to not have a backing plate that will come into contact with your paint. While the chances of it happening are pretty small with the 6" plate, 6.5" pads, it is very unlikely with the 5" plate, 6.5" pads. The 6"/6.5" combo only gives you 1/4" of tolerance. The 5"/6.5" combo allows 3/4" for a pad to be off center.Originally Posted by jiffy
Since I have never had any pad problems, I can only guess that the problem of tearing the pad occurs when the backing plate contacts the foam pad rather than the velcro material.
One advantage to 6.5" pads is the availability to get them from several sources. I don`t think the 7" pads are quite as common.
