I realize that many products do not recommend using them in the sun like polishes and waxes. I always assumed it was because of the heat the sun creates on a metal surface. If it is say 40 deg outside and sunny, thereby the surface of the car is much cooler, can you polish and wax in the sun without adverse affects ?

I say yes. I`ve done it plenty of times. Even on a black car, the surface of the paint is not that hot in the direct sun when it`s 40*F outside.

ya, you can polish and wax in the sun when it`s cold out. The products just don`t like surface temperatures in the 100`s. If it`s chilly out, they never reach those high temperatures so it`s perfectly fine to detail in the sun then.
