I am trying to polish out some water marks on a van with some cleaner wax. The marks are going away but It looks like the paint is rubbing off onto my towel. Does this mean the clear coat is gone? Thanks, I am new to this

yes the clear is gone UNLESS the paint is a single stage paint (older cars normally)

**it could also be that your removing some touch up paint somewhere also.

What make and model van? It may not be clearcoated, or it could be repainted and not clearcoated. Most newer models are clearcoated, and it is very unusual to have the clearcoat "wear off".

It`s a 2000 dodge ram van mark III. I don`t think it has been repainted. It has some pretty bad water marks. The color does not look like it`s fading on the van, but it is coming off onto my towel

I`ve had the same happen, but both cars were Toyota. One was my Red `91 Celica All-Trac when I had it, and the other was a friend`s Black `98 4Runner. The color rubbed right off on the pads and towels, but when I had the thickness of the CC tested on the Celica, it was more than thick enough. So I`m not quite sure what causes it.

Maybe the colour that came off was overspray from previous repainting?

I believe that some newer cars still are single stage paint

this is usually what it means when you get paint transfer

my fathers bmw is single stage paint red

If the clear coat had failed, it would be easy to see. It sounds like this paint is SS

It`s probably single stage. There are plenty of cars that are still cingle stage (Red Honda S2k, any black Lexus IS, numerous pre 2000 black Lexus`s, etc...). You would know if you went through the clear.

10-4 Thanks a lot. So are there any special product I can use to remove water marks on a SS paint job?

Klasse AIO works great on clearcoated paint, and I have no reason to believe it wouldn`t work excellent on SS paint. Any paint cleaner or polish should do the trick.
