Hey guys,

I detailed a black 1997 saab today. It had never been waxed. It has 85k miles.

First I clayed it. Clay ended up slightly darker but seemed pretty normal.

Paint seemed dull. I think the clear is gone.

Then I went at it with NXT. The applicator went from white to black in just a few strokes - both sides were pretty brown/black when I was done.

I did the same exact procedure on my black 99 Infiniti today and the applicator stayed perfectly white.

So basically it had to be dirt or paint coming off. What should I do next to prevent anything bad happening to the Saab?

Thanks

The saab is probably single stage paint, and the dullness most likely oxidation.

yep what gbackus said

the nxt is removing abit of the oxidation which is good

Might be worth going over it with something like AIO.

I dont have AIO right now - i`m about to work on the saab some more

I have: NXT, Meguires Gold (liquid), Meguiars cleaner and mothers cleaner waxes.

Should I do another layer with Meguiars Gold liquid clear coat wax?

I`d use one of the cleaner waxes to remove as much oxidation as you can. Eventually you`ll quit getting so much paint transfer to the pads. Then use the non-cleaner wax.

There was a write-up somewhat recently by Mike Phillips of Meguiar`s on the use of their ColorX for cleaning heavy oxidation. The results looked impressive for an OTC product applied by hand.
