I see this term thrown around a lot, but do not really know what it means. Can someone educate me?

It`s when your clearcoat wears down so much that it`s no longer protecting the color coat.

Clearcoat failure is actually when the clearcoat seperates from the base . It shows up as peeling " lifting " or crackling like dry skin .
If it wear down that is either from polishing too much , or the sun has taken it`s toll .
Almost all cars eventually lose their clear coat due to sun if not UV protected unless it`s not driven daily

How long does it usually take?
It all depends on the paint, weather, how it was cared for.
