New paint, how soon can I use Klasse?

Unfortunatly my 2002 4Runner was in an accident wich required new hood, fender, bumper and blending on 2 adjacent panels. Well actually alot more non visible stuff, $8k worth :shocked



I just picked it up from auotbody shop, It was painted about a week ago. The paint still feels soft with my fingernail. I know they baked it at 180 degrees. And also put a huge scratch on one of the doors that was not painted :down .



When can I polish and use Klasse? I am sure they had to polish the paint to remove imperfections during the paint process.

If I were you I would ask this question of the people that did the work. They know what`s on it exactly, and how to treat it.

If they polish right after to remove imperfections , it would be after wetsanding . I think most shops use 3m . I use 3m perfect-it III after wetsanding , but thats not necessary really unless you want to do extra work .

Besides a shop`s OEM paint job wont have that thick of a clear coat to go messing with wetsanding so skip that .

Honestly , the ONLY thing that you can do is to use a glaze on the paint , and not any type either .

Fresh paint needs to air out / gas out and settle about a month is safe bet before you can close it`s pores .

I would do a dawn wash , then use a real car wash solution following that for 2nd wash then use http://www.topoftheline.com/foamwaxap.html to apply one coat of the glaze , the one of these to wipe off http://www.topoftheline.com/toplinmirtow.html

then another one of those to apply a second coat , then one of these http://www.topoftheline.com/ulmic.html to remove it .

Be careful to follow proper wash and dry procedure to avoid introducing new scratches / swirls or marring .

Tasty and papi_jay are right on. I have a friend who builds show trucks, and the metallic lime green he had put on one of his trucks wasn`t even supposed to be washed for a month. The timeframe for the paint gassing out will vary by conditions, but I think 2-3 months is safe, 6 months if you`re extra paranoid. :)

Thanks for the replies. I`ll contact them on monday. It looks like they washed it alreday, and I can see hollagrams from a rotary, minor though. I am not in any rush, just want to make sure I take care of it correctly.

The glaze will remove the swirls also with a green pad . Use a blue pad and the glaze if you like 1st one panel at a time before wipe , then wipe excess and repeat by hand if you just want to protect the paint . Green pad might add light swirls

Wipe excess with a quality MF and you should be good to go applying it just once a week or after washes to protect until paint fully cures .

I know the shop buffs it out a bit after they paint it, but if it were me I would wait until I knew the paint was good and dry/cured whatever before doing anything else on it. If it is still soft it is going to be MUCH easier to damage it if you do something you shouldn`t have.
