1995 Ford Explorer Clearcoat

Hi autopians,i am wondering how hard the factory ford clearcoat is on 1995 Ford Explorer paintjobs,as i am looking to purchase my first vehicle. I have a feeling the paint is going to have plenty of swirls & scratches from the swirl-o-matic car wash,i would like to make it look decent enough to drive for a few years,then re-paint it a custom color. I am wondering what the best steps to take to make the paint perfect,and what a good beginners inexpensive rotary buffer would be to purchase,i have a porter cable 7424 & buffing pad kit from autogeek.net,thanks in advance.
