i just washed the car down with dawn..then i clay bar`d the whole thing..and when i started to go over it with the buffer i started to see lots and lots of these very tiny dots all over. Im using a 3m 5723 pad with meguiars dacp. The hood at first was very dull but once i went over it i started to get a better shine to it, but these tiny little dots started to show up..its not where you can feel them with a finger but when you look at the reflection of light on the hood its blurry and not mirror like....am i using the wrong pad or the wrong compound?? if pictures will help ill try to get pics but please help a newbie out.

It sounds like something called Orange Peel. Infortuneatly, theres not much you can do about it. Its a defect that happened when the clearcoat was painted, most cars nowadays have it unfortuneatly.

Or....it could be because the DACP is a pretty harsh polish. Follow it up with a finishing polish like MEg`s #80 and see if that helps.

its nothing close to resemblance of orange peel. Its tiny dots like the points of needles all over the hood...not sure if its the polish or the pad..should i be using a foam pad or a wool pad to buff? i used to work at carmax and we used a yellow wool pad to do the initial buffing and on black cars we finished it up with a black foam pad for the shine.

Hmm, could be the fillers in 3M. Try washing with IPA, see if it changes. If it doesn`t, I`m stumped.

I`ve been waiting for WEEKS to use that one! :LOLOL

I`m wondering if the dots aren`t something that was already in the paint and is now present after the Dawn wash and claying.

It looks like a repaint. If it is then you have paint contamination or clear failure.

As I was reading your description I thought it sounded like fisheyes or solvent pops.

How old is this car? Or at least the paint, if it`s not original?

is it possible with the right products or is it time for a repaint? Im gonna try the rest of the car where i think the paint is original..should i continue with the foam pad or get a wool pad to go with the dacp?

I think too that these are solvent pops. Tiny little bubbles, which are trapped in the clear and with more polishing - as the clear gets thinner - they start to open. Sh!tty repaint.

:werd: The pics confirm what I thought. It`s in the clear. Obviously the buffing brought it to the surface. I don`t know if you can polish it out. That`s the problem with repaints. :sadpace:
