Hey y`all,

my Chicago Electric rotary is "out for delivery" with UPS today, so I`ll have it by this afternoon. Now I need to pick up a backing plate for it (hoping to do so locally) and I know basically what I want. I`ll be using my 6.5" Meg`s pads that I`ve used on my PC for years, so I need a fitting backing plate.

What I`m wondering are the part numbers for a 3M "Hook-It" 5" (4.75" technically) plate, and a Meguiar`s 5" rotary plate. That way I can compare the two and decide which I want. I like my 3M plate for the PC and wouldn`t touch a Meg`s plate, but I`ve heard people say good things about Meg`s rotary plates.

Any input is greatly appreciated; if I can`t find something locally then I`ll be left no choice but to order one of the flex plates from Autogeek (which is frankly my last resort).

OK now I`m getting anxious -- the rotary is here, in my garage. I have the perfect beater vehicle to use it on right now, too!! :wall

Here is a link to the Meg`s 5" BP (W-64):

The only other 5" rotary plates I`ve seen are at Autogeek (but it looks like you already know about them):

I have the Meguiar`s and a 6" Lake Country plate. (LC also makes 2 7/8", 3 3/4, 4 7/8",...) I prefer the Meguiar`s (http://meguiars.com/estore/product_detailpage.cfm?product=Rotary-Buffer-Backing-Plates&sku=W-6) which has a "knob" to center the pads. The Lake Country (http://www.topoftheline.com/5velbacplat.html) has a hole to use a dowel for centering. That works if your pads have holes (the Meg`s pads don`t).

Some pad has a hole in the center and some dont. I have Meg 7.5" maroon color one and it doesnt have a center hole.

The 6.5" Meg`s pads have a hole in the center of the felt on the back; just not on the pad itself. It figures the P/N for their backing plate would be so close to the W-64DA :wall

Thanks guys, looks like that`s what I`ll be picking up. I had hoped for 3M to have what I needed but I probably will be fine either way. I hope that beater car is still around tomorrow to play with (neighbor has a buick riviera he`s trying to sell, and it`s in CRAPPY shape so I`m sure he`d let me play with it a bit) :chuckle:
