i was wondering how important clay grade is. i know for some tuff stuff medium grade is good, and the ones u see at autozone are fine grade but would using medium grade have any adverse effect when using it on the entire car. i find myself going over the surface multiple times before i take out contaminents when using the mothers clay bar.

The fine grade is for normal claying. The heavier grades are for paint overspray removal and stuff like that. It is more abrasive than fine grade clay. The very act of claying with a fine grade may create fine scratches that polishing will remove nicely. A medium grade clay may cause a few more scratches that will require possibly more agressive polishing. Anyway, if your car requires a medium grade clay then you probably can tell. I would always start with the fine grade and then move up if its necessary. Its basically just a more agressive approach to claying.
