An older friend of mine at work has a 1970 Karmann Ghia that he loves. He thinks he takes great care of it. He has been talking to me about getting a new paint job because his old one is completely oxidized. The old paint job is only about 7 years old too:D . I told him to let me at least try to detail the engine cover and if he liked what I did, he can compensate me for the rest of the car. I spent about 2.5 hours on the engine cover alone so I know this would be a big job. The paint was in horrible condition. He said he had been using a PC and all kinds of Meguiars products he got at AutoZone. Here was my process.

Washed the car with MG Gold Class:

Clayed with Claymagic and suds

Tried to see if AIO would work it, I didn`t have the patience.

Used SFX-2 on 6 and it was still not going very well.

Used SFX1 on 6 and it started getting the job done.

Did 2 passes of engine cover with SFX-1

One pass with SSR1.0 on 6

Applied #16 by hand

Here are some before shots. Don`t mind the holes, he removed the luggage rack and emblems before coming over.

You can see the horrible oxidation on the engine cover here

I realize a few of the afters are not perfect however I feel it is a good start if you look at what I was up against.

He was extremely happy with the results on his engine cover so he will be coming over to my house every Wednesday for a few hours until we complete it. When I was talking about compensation, since he is a good friend, all he will be doing for me is buying me some more product and new pads to replace the stuff I use on his car.

I loved the SFX-1. It worked great at removing swirls and that bad oxidation. I will have some full body shots of this car after we are all said and done since he will only be coming over at night for the next 6 weeks or so.

Who says a PC can`t do surface correction!?

Although it took time, you did an awesome job with the PC.

Excellent, excellent work :xyxthumbs

I have the SSR2.5 and like the SFX-1 better for heavy oxidation removal.

Like I mentioned. I hope to have some full body shots of the Karmann Ghia after it is all done so this will be a work in progress.
