the pinnacle handbook says to use the swirl remover with the finishing pad at 4000-4500 orbits per min. that seems really fast unless im comparing opm and rpm wrong.

im just wondering if i need to use my de-walt rotary with the finishing pad at 4500 rpm? that still seems way way too fast.

Nah, don`t use the Dewalt for this (at 4500 RPM you`d be down to metal pretty fast ;) ).

Your hunch was right, you can`t compare orbits-per-minute to revolutions-per-minute. Totally different. Just use the PC at setting 4 or between 4 and 5- that`ll be about 4,000- 4,500 orbits-per-minute.

If the Dewalt is variable speed, run it SLOW !

yea, its got a thumbwheel speed control from like 1000 rpm up.

i just got the pad set from autogeek with 4 or 5 different pads. im anxious to try it!

evil_c5- Treat the Dewalt with respect while you build familiarity with it.

You might still want to pick up a PC sometime. Everyone I can think of (and I`m probably forgetting somebody :o ) who uses a rotary also keeps a PC/Cyclo on hand for some jobs.

An analogy might be: people who have chainsaws also have hand saws for the lighter work. Even people who absolutely can`t get by without the chainsaw will use a handsaw for some jobs. Simply a matter of using the right tool for the job.

Until you get comfortable with controlling a rotary I would recommend starting out with the safest, least-cutting or non-cutting products and pads.

Try a pure-polish, glaze or wax with a finishing or polishing pad until you feel you`ve got it under control. After that move on to more aggressive products as appropriate.

Brian,

I have a a PC and about 30 pads if you want to try it out. I can bring it to the next MAGNA meeting if you`re interested. I`d definately like to take the rotary jump one day, I`m just not ready yet, plus my PC can handle most anything I throw at it (it just may take a little longer than a rotary).

I too am anxious to get polishing, I`ve added like 6+ new products to my collection over the winter that I`m dieing to try out. The GN is lined up for VM + Souveran! I can`t wait.

i have used a rotary for about 9 years, so im comfortable with it. i have just always used 3m products with it.

steve, you will like the souveran, i used it on my 1st gn many times. it has a very deep wet shine. i didnt continue with it because to me the shine didnt last as long as some others out there. but that was 7 or 8 years ago, maybe the durability has changed.

I don`t know if this number / RPM range from Porter-Cable will help-

Note: The speed control is numbered from 1 to 6. According to Porter Cable here`s the rpm range: (Speeds can vary 200 rpm depending on the line voltage [110 volts to 120 volts] in your area.1 = 1,000 to 1,200 rpm, 2 = 1,400 to 1,600 rpm, 3 = 1,800 to 2,000 rpm, 4 = 2,200 to 2,400 rpm, 5 = 2,600 to 2,800 rpm, 6 = 3000 rpm
