Clay 1st?

I am beginning the paint resto in the Morning and I am unclear, If I am going to do some heavy work with IP and then FP do I need to clay 1st

I would absolutely use clay first. By the looks of things some PG may be needed but Menzernas products are mechanical cleaners and will not completely remove all of the embedded particles. It looks like you have a long, fun day ahead of you so what is another 30 mintues to make sure the surface is properly prepped. Good luck with the project.

Yeah, take a few minutes and clay it. That`ll pull out any contamination before it gets rounded off by the polish, making it harder to clay out later.

I have Clay Magic medium grade clay right now, it seems kinda harsh, left micromarring when I used it to remove some overspray. Is that OK or should I get something less aggressive?http://markviii.org/~boatmangc/paint1.jpg

If your clay is causing marring like that, you need to rethink your method of claying. Remember that you need to frequently knead the clay to expose a clean clay surface. If you don`t, you can cause marring by rubbing the contaminants back onto the next section of paint.

The marring I am showing was preexisting, Sorry i guess the pic with the text wasn`t very clear.

If you look at the 1st 2 pics @ the top of the post you can see some hazing on the left of the hood, that is from the clay.

I use my QD spray for lube and knead often.

The 1st time I clayed it I used the clay that came with my Zainos kit and it didn`t marr at all.

Unless you`re using it to remove overspray, the clay you oughta be using shouldn`t cause any marring. I wouldn`t use any clay that *does* cause marring.



That clay-induced marring in the (correct) pics looks awfully severe to me...better get some "regular" clay.

MS22 what is PG?

PG is Menzerna Power Gloss. PG is a concentrated form of Intensive Polish, it has more abrasive particles in it than IP, but not larger ones . Theory is twice as many particles equals twice the working power. I just realized that the question was directed to MS22, sorry.

All detailing clayâ€â„¢s contain an abrasive; the differences between the types of detailing clayâ€â„¢s are the abrasive levels. Some manufacturers distinguish the differing levels by colour (i.e. Clay Magic Red is a medium abrasive, whereas the Blue is a Fine abrasive.



a)Fine- clay that pulls or shears off the imbedded paint contamination and encapsulates it.



b)Medium- clay is used to remove paint over-spray; it contains an abrasive that abrades the paint particles while the clay encapsulates it
