On another board I do to, we do a Secret Santa every year. Usually 60-70 participate, this year it is near 200!

Anyway, I made it known to the person matching members that if she were to give me someone in my area, I would be willing to do an exterior detail for a gift. She managed to find someone who lives a block from me! Small world...especially when you consider this board has well over 20,000 active members in the last 30 days.

Normally, we have no contact with our `elf` until after they receive their gift. Obviously, in this case, that was not possible. I called her up and made arrangements to detail the car today. I had a Land Cruiser and E320 that I had been trying to do since late October but rain in November and travel on his part earlier this month meant I had to take care of his cars first. I didn`t get started on this car until 3PM and didn`t finish completely until nearly 6PM with very little natural light left.

The car was not in good shape. It is obviously parked near sprinklers regularly because the hood was absolutely etched and the windows are so spotted it is like a coating. Claying, polishing with a cutting pad and compound and even a razor blade didn`t make a dent in the two front windows.

I had much better luck with the paint, although some of the deeper water spot etching and bird bomb etching wouldn`t come out completely on the hood, it does look a great deal better. I started with a QEW wash and clay. I then began working the paint, starting with DACP and a cutting pad, then stepped up to Clearkote`s test compound (which is somewhat more aggressive than DACP) with a cutting pad, then back to DACP and the cutting pad on the hood, then #80 with a polishing pad on the whole car. I then finished it off with EX w/carnauba. The sun had already set and I wanted to use my least finicky sealant in high humidity, cool temperature conditions.

This is what I started with:

This is after all polishing steps but before EX. I was loosing light quickly, no way I could wait to apply and remove EX. Yes, the picture is a bit clurry, I had to shoot it at 1/8th of a second in the low light. I must have moved slightly....and it was the last pic on the roll and I didn`t have time to pick up a new one before I had to start on the Civic. As you can see, it does look just a wee bit better. ;)

2004 Hummer H2. I had polished it with PwC and a polishing pad and topped it with EX w/carnauba back in late August. It is normally driven mostly on weekends but it is driven in the rain, duly noted by how filthy it was this time. Paint still had noticable slickness and still looked real good, so I simply topped it with Nattys by hand.

2002 Jaguar S Type. Weekly regular, car stays in good shape, but it hadn`t been polished and waxed since July...again, the October and November rains really put me behind. Some light spider swirling, so I polished with #80 and a polishing pad and topped with #16.

1969 Dodge Dart. Last detailed in June. Pretty much a weekend car but he wanted me to really put some shine to it. I polished with 1Z Metallic Polish and a polishing pad, Glanz Wax by hand and topped with Natty`s by hand. Really gave it a wet shine!

The Civic looks like it was repainted! You really brought the paint back to life.

I tried to help a friend with a black Camry with similar issues a few weeks ago...and learned that SSR 2.5 does not break down well when it is sprinkling, LOL. Do you think DACP would be better on the etching than SSR 2.5 or Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover? I`m using a PC and have light, medium & heavy cutting pads on hand...also have some SSR 3. We are going to try to get together again after the holidays.

What did you use in the fenderwells on the Hummer?

BEAUTIFUL work Scott!! That Dodge is just scrumptious!! :bow

When you say cutting pad on the Civic detail are you using the Meg`s 7006 pad?

Last, a couple of Chevy trucks.

2000 Chevy 1500. This customer is way out in the country, so I only go out once a year. Last time I detailed his daugher`s VW Bug, so it had probably been at least a year and a half since I did the truck. Decent shine but moderate spider swirling. Sun was going down by the time I finished with the paint so sorry, no sun on paint pics. I polished it with #80 and a polishing pad, VM with a polishing pad and topped with EX w/carnauba.

2003 Silverado. Regular customer, has me wax it about every 2-3 months. Paint was in decent shape, very minimal cobwebbing. Polished with AIO and a polishing pad and topped with #16. This turned out to be a very WET combo! Definitely going to use this one more often. :)

What can I say? Awesome as ever.

Scott gets so many "bows", that the smileys are borrowing Monica Lewinsky`s knee pads. :rofl

mtodde-I haven`t used SSR2.5 so I can`t really compare it with DACP. I was really suprised at the dent it and Clearkote`s test compound made in the etchings. Once I washed the hood, I was stunned at how bad it was and how dull the paint was overall. I was equally stunned how well it polished out!

Mike-I love detailing that Dodge, especially this time because it was dry and I could pull it out for better pics. The 340 is definitely not stock, real lopey idle. The owner has a whole new suspension for it with urethane bushings, larger torsion and anti-roll bars, front disc brake conversion, going to swap the 2.73s with something in the mid 3 range and the engine is going to be freshened up.

Yes, the 7006 burgandy pad. No noticable marring that I could see, either with the CK compound or DACP.

Lee-I have more smilies that are definitely more expressive, like this one:

Lee: That is hilarious!!!

Scott: Must I even say it ;) ...Exceptional work as usual.

I honestly thought that Civic was a dull dark green...How did the customer feel?

I like the Chevy`s too, but I`m biased now ;)

Seems as the H2 and the black Silvy both have the Nitto Terra Grappler tires...Do you happen to know how they like them? My dad wanted to get the 20" SS wheels in chrome mounted on the Terry Grappler`s for an aggressive, but still sporty look.

Sean-The Civic`s owner is not a customer, but my Secret Santa `elf` from OT. I did this one as a gift. She hasn`t seen it yet. Her boyfriend and her dropped it off for me since she had to work at 5PM. They are coming to get it tonight. Hopefully, I can swing by tomorrow and get a couple more pics with better light...should be easy since she lives right down the street from me.

I don`t know how my customers feel about the Nittos for sure but I know the guy the owner of the black Silverado works for wants to buy them for his son`s truck, so I guess at least that guy likes them. Me? I hate them. Suck up too much protectant and the tread on the sides is a PITA to dress evenly.

Beautiful work as always Scott. The color change on the Honda is amazing I figure alot of it has to do with the lighting.

Looks like Santa came early for one happy car owner. Did you do the work in a Santa suit???? :D

I cleaned it with QEW, brushes and terry cloth towels and protected it with Armor All. I regularly wash this H2 so it is easy to maintain the fenderwells like that.

Pat-the black paint has green metallic in it. I didn`t even notice until they picked up the car at around midnight and when she was backing it up, his headlights hit the side of the car and I could see the metallic.

I got a very nice post from her on the other board in the (temporary) Secret Santa forum. Made me feel good to know she appreciated the work I put into it. :)
