new rotary - opinions please

Still not bought a rotary but plan to this weekend. Here are my options and I`d appreciate some feedback based on these details as to which would be the best buy

No on the 1st one; speeds are wrong.



If the second has a gradual trigger up to 1800rpm it looks fine.



The last one is not good either.

If the 3rd one in my initial thread is essentially a single speed (1000rpm) machine, would this not be a good basic starter rotary? I`ve got to justify spending another £100 ($180-odd) if I go for the Hitachi - is it simply a speed issue as Clarke do make quality products and Machine Mart are a good retailer.

As I read the specs, the latest one has a choice of 0-600 rpms or 3400 rpms. The first range is too slow and the second (fixed?) speed is too high.



I wouldn`t want a fixed speed polisher, far too limiting. Some products work well at around 800 rpms (1Z polishes) while others need higher speeds (but almost always under 2000 rpms). Having control over the speed is very desirable.

Ge t a PC I would if i had the chance to do it all over again. and find a friend with a rotary if you need to get the swirls out that bad

Update.



Machine Mart confirm that the Clarke CP180 (the cheapest option above) is a variable speed rotary with speed dial set in either 6 or 8 speeds between 1-3000 rpm. It`ll accept an M14 hook & loop backing pad so can be adapted to suit Megs/LC pads.



I`m going to give this baby a whirl and report back.



BTW I have a PC already - just looking to take my paint to the next level.

Well I`ve done it - went out and bought the Clarke CP180 rotary Saturday morning. The kicker is that it`s variable speed - starts @ 1000rpm and has 6 speed markings on the dial - equates to around 300rpm per calibration. Just had to buy a smaller backing pad as the one its supplied with is 7" so way too big for my 6.5" pads.



Seems like a good machine - plan to road test some time this week so will write a review - a must for the UK contingent here for sure I think.

I`d looked at this too Craig but the price was simply too high for me and the Clarke seems really nice initially - solid and well made and with extra brushes too.

hi there andy i have the hitachi and i have found this machine faultless it has a good balance to it and also the varible speed is a god send.i use it to make me a living and i would not sell it for anything .

Hi,



New boy on here and saw this thread about the CP180. Research I`d done led me down this route and I`d like to actually get the machine soon. Not just for the car(s) but also as a `proper` sander ....



Did you actually write up anything anywhere about the CP180? If not, what do you think of it?
