Any ideas?

I`m wondering what people here do for engine compartment cleaning.

What are the main steps?

What degreaser should you use?

What products to use?

Seems like a good thing to do given that it is cold out and my car is almost a year old...

Thank you for the advice!

I guess that was too obvious to me. :)

If you detail your engine, take pictures of the process. Since we have the same engine I would like to see if you cover anything or run into any problems/difficult areas. Engine detailing is one thing I am afraid of doing...

First off, i`m guessing you don`t have many leaks on a Lexus. I would spray the front of the car with water, open the hood and spray a mild cleaner ( interior cleaner mild) and let it sit for 30 seconds and then rinse, with garden hose pressure and then repeat, make sure you know were the computers and other electrics are, and don`t overwet (no covering). If an area is extra dirty, scrub with a soft brush or wash mitt. If the underhood is dirty then use an old wash mitt and mild cleaner. Let drip dry for a few minutes and spray with a water based dressing.

This system has worked for me for years, except on the old Fords. If your unsure , don`t start the vehicle for an hour. If you run into problems, with any engine wash, you have to find the wet area and spray (or dry it) with WD 40 or such.

I think I am going to check with my Lexus detailer who does good work and make sure I am covering everything I need to.

Don`t over think it...remember that your engine room is designed to operate in rain and snow conditions. Good idea to cover the coil assembly and Engine Management (computer) box..if it`s under the hood...I use aluminum foil since it`s easy to mould around things...

but...

Even these items are designed to get wet. If you plan to hit them with a pressure washer for a while ...that`s another matter...but for casual washing I wouldn`t get too nervous.

David`s article is great for cleaning the engine compartment. I used his method a while back and got some pretty good results. You can see my before/after in this thread (http://autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42205).
