Well, I just dropped by sears and picked up a craftsman 500w halogen work light. I was wondering what angles yield the best visibility. I`m having some trouble seeing the swirling that is otherwise very apparent in sunlight. So far, the best results I`ve gotten (on horizontal surfaces), is to ditch the tripod and put the lamp in a cabinet that is about ceiling level and angle it down. Are there any tricks of the trade you guys employ to be able to see the swirls better, without prematurely blinding yourself?

This is probably obvious to most people here, but it wasnt to me: turn off all other lights around you to reduce ambient lighting as much as possible. Close your garage door and pull down the shades of any windows if you`re working in the day time.
