View Full Version : Getting paint off tire tread

I`ve just put new wheels on my SL500. The factory - for identifying or whatever reason - sprayed a bright yellow dot about the size of a coffee cup for both back tires on the tread, in the middle of the tire.

Obviously the paint wore off the tread in the first few rotations, but is still there inside the tread and on the base of the tire. Because of the color, it stands out whenever I`m parked and the spot is visible from the back (more times than you would think!)

Nothing I have tried has got rid of it, and it`s hard because the tread has a V pattern which means the paint is in a very tight spot. And because I don`t use the car in the rain means it won`t wear off.

Anything I can do, without damaging or scouring the rubber, to get rid of this barrier to perfection?

You could always give it a shot of black spray paint...

Light the tires up. Hold the gas long enough to burn through the majority of the tread. By the time your rear wheels are turned into slicks, the paint should be pretty much gone ;)

Have you tried spraying some nail polish remover in the tread?

You may be able to pressure wash it off at your local self serve car wash.

Hmm, well I suppose there`s some ideas there... painting, firing and blasting! All seems a little destructive.

I`m aware that the best answer - using paint stripper - will also damage the tire, so I`m reluctant to go down that track.

Any more ideas?

I get the paint dots off of new tires with some Nail Polish Remover on a rag.

Make sure you dress right afterwards :)

It will actually wear off by itself in a couple weeks. I had the same stuff on my Kumho`s and it was gone after 2 weeks.

The sand and particles from everyday driving abrade away the markings.

Eagle One Tire & Wheel will work pretty well, the same thing was done to mine.
