Maybe the first non-lousy factory paint job? As we all could see, todays paints were/are crappy. I remember my first trip to Japan, in 93; where I saw lots of beautifully finished cars. For example Nissan had a paint system called SFC (Super Fine Coating), which was smooth and glossy, but hard & chip resistant as well. Then the cheapo wave began. We got oranges instead of cars.

As a automotive journo, I was more than happy today, as Honda introduced the new Legend (aka Acura RL) in Japan. I have a wallpaper from the RL, on which the car seems remarkably "detailed". Quote from the press material:

Ultra-high-gloss exterior finish for deep contrast and a spectacular shine

-Conventional single clear-coat finishes involve a prep coat applied using electrodeposition, followed by a first intermediate coat, a second intermediate coat, a base coat, and a clear coat.

-The new Legend goes beyond this standard and has an ultra-high-gloss exterior finish. Specialists painstakingly water-polish the surface after the intermediate coats are applied to make it smooth, then apply two coats of clear finish. Increasing the thickness of the clear coats creates a deep contrast that shows off all six body colors beautifully.

Hey! Could it mean...? Please watch those Acuras, and tell about the paint quality! We in Europe will get the Legend only in the spring of 2005; the earliest.

So are they wet sanding the cars before going to clear coat?

Interesting, but nothing new, usually high end luxury and sport cars are sanded and polished between multiple coats. How much is the RL/Legend going to cost? What are projected production numbers? What other cars is RL/Legend competing against?

The new RL has a base MSRP of $48,900, and if it`s like the previous RL, the only option would be the navigation system. According to Acura, it`s going up against the BMW 530i, Audi A6, Lexus GS300 and the Mercedes E320.

Well, the real high end cars are but even the new Rolls Phantom I detail has orange peel in it. His Bentley and Lamborghini didn`t though.

I hadn`t heard that about the paint process on the new RL. I`ll really be looking forward to detailng one.

I thought the RL would be in pretty much the same market segment as before.

Hi, I looked over the new Acura RL last week, the black paint was awesome (had the blue flake), definitely better than previous Acuras. I saw no orange peel and it seemed thick. The RL offers a new AWD system, paddle shifts, and the coolest Navi/control system I`ve seen. Didn`t like the exterior styling that much, but the interior was nice. I drive a CL but I was just curious about this new Acura. Not sure what it competes with, I`d say Cadillac.

My $34,000.00 Mazda RX-8 has twice the Orange Peel of my $16,000.00 Mazda Protege5.

Not to bring this back from the dead but I just checked out a new RL at the local dealership and all I can say is wow! The paint was amazing. Hands down the best paint I have seen below $80,000. The car itself is pretty damn sweet, it comes fully loaded including navigation for less than $50,000. I would say that it competes with the BMW 530i and the Benz E320.

P.S. It also has surround sound audio which is also amazing, hearing sounds rotate around you is pretty damn sweet!

Yeah, as Acura said. Staying in the same segment was a key for Acura. While the Legend and the first RL were platform-sisters and shared the architecture, this new RL, aka Legend is a different story. It is the widest and longest adaptation of the midsize Accord platform. This was flexible enough to include all the tech-goodies, but no too cost intensive. And of course this paint!!!

Must be really good because since the thread-start it has won numerous awards:

- Car of the Year in Japan for 2004-`05

- Most Advanced Technology Award (believe me, this IS an achievement in the JDM!!!)

- Car & Driver`s Ten Best; Best Luxury Sedan

Can`t wait till spring to sample one!!!
