View Full Version : I`m looking for a compound that WILL haze paint

To make a long story short, some cars I do are trashed on the outside.

I have used up to SSR3/rotary at 1700rpm/cutting pad and still some swirls remain on the worst of the worst cars.

SSR3 has deminishing abrasives. So does Menzerna PG I think. Is there an abrasive product at that level that does not deminish?

And yes I expect it to haze the paint to where I have to follow up with another polish.

TIA

I think there is a point where you have to sacrifice some swirls on certain cars in order not to take the paint down to far. PG is a heavy duty compound i`m not sure it gets heavier than that. I use that to take the majorty of swirls out, then use IP or FP2 on a second pass to take out most of the rest. I know the cars you talking about, they look like one big swirl.

You have to look at it like this, the car is trash because the person never took care of it, and probably won`t afterwards. Personally i think as a detailer not only do you have to evaluate the car, but also the client. Will they take care of the car after your done. Should you remove all the swirls and abrade more paint or take out the majority and leave them with more paint because chances are those swirls are coming back.

Do they diminish?

Hazing the paint with a rotary is not a good idea. Too dangerous for the paint, IMHO. Proper use of the rotary should not require any hazing. There comes a point when you say good enough.

Having a haze on the paint is fine when using a compound. It`s common. It just has to do with the size of the abrasive in the compound. You just have to follow up with a polish.

3M`s Fine Cut Rubbing Compound leaves a haze. PRO`s DUZ-All leaves a very slight haze.

Like zaneo said, you gotta live with it or youll polish the paint down to far.

Aaron, I see your point of view but under that logic there would be no market for any product more aggressive the SSR3, which is not the case. However, I may indeed be too picky getting these beater type cars swirl free. I may or may not try something more abrasive than SSR3 in the future.

I was under the impression FCRC is much less abrasive than SSR3 so not sure if that would help me.

If you are to that point, might wetsanding be an alternative?

3M makes a lot of different RCs and their "fine cuts" are not very aggressive. The PI-II FCRC (pn 39002) and PI-III RC (pn 05933) are both quite mild and don`t leave much if any hazing. It sounds like you want something much stronger than those. The PI-III Extra Cut RC (pn 05936) is more aggressive, you might try that.

Thanks for the options.

We`ll see if I ever become brave enough to use them :)

A test panel might be in order for those.

I`ll call Meg`s at some point to and ask which of their products might work well for me.

This is the car that led me to look for something stronger:

When you said you used a cutting pad, was that a foam pad? If so, why not try a wool pad for some extra cut with the ssr3?

Anyone know if SSR3 is as agressive or more agressive than AutoInt`s Heavy Duty Cutting Compound?

It`s pretty agressive stuff.
