Sorry for the stupid question, but is "clay" the same thing as polishing compound?

Since no one was nice enough to help you, Clay is a sythetic substance that when used correctly will leave your car surface contaminate free and very very smooth. You must use it with a lubrcant such as car wash soap or a QD spray. It is a must have in your detailing lineup

you use it after you wash, before you polish. usually people wash again after claying to remove any residue it left. good luck and have fun! I would recommend reading autopias ebook for a ton of info.
