the paint is rather dull, oxidized a good amount.

what`s the best way to go about shining it up by hand?

I have some rubbing compound and mequires swirl mark remover (#9, I think)

normal car washing soap, meguirs #16 paste wax also.

what type of rubbing compound :nixweiss (that sounds vague)

Remember start at the least aggressive then work your way up.

on an 86 I`m sure if it`s cc or ss.

Pictures would really help to answer better.

Bingo.

Pics are nice to look at, but don`t always help because you lose so much detail. Personally I have little faith in assessing problems via picture unless they`re glaringly apparent. It usually comes down to an in-person judgement call.

Just make sure you have at least a couple polishes (gentle to moderate strength) and start off experimenting on a small patch first to see how it does. It depends on how heavy the oxidation is. You don`t want to go over the whole truck to find out it wasn`t strong enough...

AIO for the oxidation perhaps?

I was thinking something like Meguires 3 step but maybe a little stronger.

this is the rubbing compound i have. I was going to use it to try and take off the remaining residue from my S10`s "CHEVROLET" sticker removal. It didnt work.

I`m going to be doing this one by hand, as I dont have a PC or a buffer.

ok, i`ll look into that.

and would it be ok to then apply meguires #16 paste wax, by hand, after doing those other steps with 1z?
